Marni's Story
Many years of clinical depression, drugs, and alcohol, had left me a shell of a human being. When I was nearing 40, I realized I needed to make some very big changes or I may not get another chance. In 1997, I packed a suitcase, bought an airline ticket, and moved to Chicago, where I lived in a transient hotel for the first year. I continued to struggle with depression and alcohol, but I also felt a major shift in my entire perspective of life.
After another milestone birthday, and FINALLY feeling like my life was heading in the right direction, I sought out Eric Dean Spruth for a transformative tattoo. When I first spoke with Eric, I told him that I always envisioned a feather (I’d even had dreams about feathers). After researching feathers and their symbolism (with Eric’s assistance), as well as exploring my personal reasons for wanting this permanent symbol on my body, I was ready for the next-to-final step – choosing a specific feather. I chose the peacock feather. I’ve always admired the beauty of these majestic birds and their feathers are without a doubt some of the most spectacular on this planet. Peacocks are able to eat poisonous snakes without harm which symbolizes incorruptibility and immortality. They also replace their feathers – a symbol of renewal - and the “eye” represents all seeing. As a peace and human rights activist, this feather’s symbolism resonated deeply within my being.
Eric’s wife, Sara, who I have been friends with for many years, designed my tattoo. We looked at photos of realistic feathers, but settled on a more stylized one. It was made to look more like a henna tattoo which we agreed was more interesting.
All in all, the entire experience was quite positive and when I look at my beautiful tattoo, I am continually inspired. I am finishing up my Masters degree in Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences in December of 2011 (at age 54) and plan to work in a career where I will be able to actively participate in the restoration of habitats throughout Illinois.
